Limited batches. Numbered pieces.
"The UK’s Premier Maker of Canadian Larch End-Grain Boards."
The Rarity of the North. The Precision of the British Workshop.
Provenance is Everything. In the sub-zero wilderness of the Canadian North, the Larch tree—the Tamarack—defies the seasons. It is a wood of contradictions: a conifer with the heart of a hardwood, naturally infused with protective resins that make it nearly impervious to time, moisture, and the elements.
A First for the British Kitchen.
At EkSeHandcrafted, we are the first in the United Kingdom to reclaim this legendary timber for the professional culinary space. We don’t just build boards; we engineer vertical-grain surfaces that "self-heal" under the blade, preserving the edge of your finest steel and the integrity of your ingredients.
The Heritage of the Hand.
Every board is a singular work of architectural grain, hand-selected and refined in our Maidenhead workshop. We embrace a philosophy of "Slow Craft"—where the seasoning of the wood, the precision of the joinery, and the depth of the finish cannot be rushed.
This is not an accessory. It is a generational investment for those who understand that the finest meals begin with the finest foundations.

The Collection Showcase
The "Self-Healing" Surface: Our end-grain construction allows your knife to slide between the wood fibers rather than severing them. When you lift the blade, the fibers spring back—preserving both your knife’s edge and the board’s surface.
The "Feathered" look: Each Larchsmith board carries the forest’s mark. Oiled end-grain shows a bold, high-contrast feather pattern — a warm, golden focal point for the modern UK kitchen.

The Larch Advantage: A Living Investment
At EkSe Handcrafted, we selected Canadian Larch (Tamarack) not for its rarity, but for its unique biological architecture. It is one of the few woods globally that possesses the perfect intersection of sanitation, durability, and blade protection.
1. The "Bundle of Straws" Principle (End-Grain)
Unlike standard boards where the wood grain runs horizontally, our end-grain construction stands the wood fibres vertically.
Self-Healing: When your knife strikes the board, it slides between the fibres rather than cutting across them. Once the blade is lifted, the fibres spring back together, significantly reducing visible scarring.
Blade Longevity: Because you aren't cutting against a hard surface, your professional steel stays sharper for longer.
2. Natural Antimicrobial Intelligence
Canadian Larch is famously high in natural resin and tannins. In its native sub-arctic environment, these resins protect the tree from rot and decay in harsh, wet conditions.
Hygienic Surface: These same resins act as a natural barrier in your kitchen, neutralising bacteria and preventing moisture from deeply penetrating the board.
Water Resistance: Larch is historically used in boat building; its inherent ability to repel moisture makes it the most stable softwood for culinary use.
3. The Aesthetics of the Tundra
The short growing season in Northern Canada results in incredibly tight annual growth rings. This density creates the signature "amber mosaic" pattern unique to EkSe boards. Each piece is a geological record of the Canadian wilderness, hand-finished in our British workshop.
4. Precision Cured
We only use kiln-dried timber. By controlled-drying the wood to a specific moisture content before we begin the multi step crafting process, we ensure your board remains stable, flat, and resistant to the warping common in inferior wood products.
Care and Longevity
Wipe with warm water and dry upright. Avoid soaking and dishwashers. Oil lightly when the surface looks dry.
