From Canadian Forest to Your Kitchen: The Journey of a Larchsmith Board

Before it is a Larchsmith, it is a sentinel. It stands tall in the vast, ancient forests of Canada, a silent witness to the passing of seasons. This is the Canadian Larch, a tree whose timber is a masterpiece of nature—uncommonly dense, imbued with a warm, golden fire, and legendary for its resilience.

The story of your EkSeHandcrafted board does not begin in our workshop. It begins with a pilgrimage to these forests.

The Selection

We don’t simply order timber; we seek it. Our founder personally selects each consignment of Larch, choosing only those pieces that exhibit the character, density, and flawless grain required to become a Larchsmith. This is a deliberate, unhurried process, a dialogue between the artisan and the raw material. It is a promise of quality that begins thousands of miles away.

The Journey

Once selected, the timber embarks on its transatlantic journey. It travels from the quiet wilderness of Canada to the heart of the English countryside, arriving at our workshop not as mere wood, but as potential. It carries with it the spirit of its origin, waiting to be revealed.

The Transformation

This is where the true alchemy begins. In the hands of our founder—the sole UK artisan dedicated to this craft—the Larch is transformed. Under the marque of EkSeHandcrafted, the wood is meticulously cut, seasoned, and arranged.

The creation of the signature end-grain surface is an act of patience and precision. Each small block is inspected and placed, composing a unique mosaic of grain and colour. It is then fused, sculpted, and sanded through multiple stages, each finer than the last, until the surface is as smooth as polished stone.

The final step is an anointing. The board is submerged in pure, food-safe mineral oil and finished with a balm of natural beeswax, awakening the deep, lustrous colour of the Larch and giving it a permanent, subtle sheen.

From a towering tree to the heart of your home, the journey is one of reverence. When you welcome a Larchsmith board into your kitchen, you acquire more than a beautiful object. You become the final custodian of a story—a story of wild nature, of transatlantic passage, and of the unwavering dedication of a single craftsman.
